Cantabile's Founding Artistic Director, Mark Sirett, is a native of Kingston and graduate of Queen's University. He holds both masters and doctoral degrees in choral conducting and pedagogy from the University of Iowa and has taught at the University of Alberta, the University of Western Ontario and Queen’s University. For six years he served as Organist/Music Director at St. George's Cathedral, Kingston. Under his direction the Cathedral Girl Choristers won first prize in the 1996 CBC Choral Competition for amateur choirs.

Since founding the Cantabile Choirs in the fall of 1996, the choirs have received numerous distinctions at the regional and national level of the National Music Festival Finals, including the Mathieson, Cooke, and City of Lincoln Trophies, and recently a Gold Award at the Young Prague 2004 Music Competition.

Dr. Sirett has won two international awards in conducting: the Jury Prize for Imaginative Programming and Artistry at the 2002 Cork International Choral Festival, and Outstanding Conductor Award at the 2004 Young Prague Festival.

Dr. Sirett is frequently in demand as a guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator. He has directed the Ontario Youth Choir and the Alberta Honors Children's Chorus. He has served as clinician with the Ontario Vocals Festival, the Royal Canadian College of Organists, and the Royal School of Church Music, and has adjudicated festivals in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, London, and Calgary. He was guest conductor of the Amabile Choirs London ON for the Amabile Festival in February 2005.

Dr. Sirett is also an award-winning composer whose works are frequently performed by some of Canada's leading ensembles. Commissions have included works for the National Youth Choir of Canada, the Amabile Youth Singers, Ottawa Regional Youth Choir, La Jeunesse, Elora Festival Singers, and the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir. His published sacred and secular works are found in the catalogues of Boosey and Hawkes, ECS Publishing, Walton, Hinshaw, Alliance, Augsburg/Fortress, Warner/Chappell, and Canadian International.

A Blessing

SS, and piano, Alliance Music AMP-0712  Commissioned by St. John’s Ravenscourt Boy’s Choir, Winnipeg MB, under the direction of Michael Proudfoot.  This prayer-like setting is especially suited to young voices.  The text is Irish, a less familiar version of the Irish Blessing. Easy.

All Winter Long

A gentle, lilting 6/8 metre builds to an exuberant celebration of spring and concluding ‘dance of the sun.’ The evocative poetry is Inuit in origin. Excellent concert or festival selection for young voices

Irish Lullaby

A traditional lullaby sung in Irish. (A pronunciation guide makes the language very easy.) The simple piano score supports a unison first verse, and a second with a flowing descant. Charming folk song especially suitable for very young voices.

Coming in 2009 J’entends le moulin SS, piano and violin.  Boosey & Hawkes.  A spirited arrangement of this favourite Quebecois folk-tune full of ‘joie de vivre.’  The turning of the windmill is heard in the exciting piano and violin accompaniment.   Easy.

Coming in 2009 Ma come bali bene bela bimba
SSA and piano.  Boosey & Hawkes.  This engaging and familiar Italian tune comes from the Veneto; the language is repetitive and easy to learn.  The colourful piano writing captures the twirling of the young dancer.  A charming number for younger voices and teens. 

Sunny Bank

This is a joyful contemporary setting of the traditional English carol text. The work won first prize in the Amadeus Choir of Greater Toronto Carol Competition. Imaginative piano writing, spirited rhythms, plus whistling make this a delightful work for young voices. An excellent work for concert, festival or worship for young singers.

The Lamb

A haunting setting of William Blake’s wonderful poetry. The work won the Ruth Watson Henderson Composition Award. Expressive and lyrical writing brings out the best in young voices. An excellent concert and festival selection.

Though We Be But Children
Two-part and piano, Hinshaw Music HMC 2131 This lyrical ballad celebrates youth and the great promise children hold for the future. The text was written by Kathleen Smith, a member of the Peterborough Children’s Chorus which commissioned this work. 

When Christ Was Born of Mary Free

SS and piano, Hinshaw Music HMC1978 Particularly effective for young voices, a lilting melody gathers momentum and bursts into a joyous “Gloria in excelsis”.  A winner in the Amadeus Choir Carol Competition. An excellent concert and festival selection.

Blake’s Cradle Song

D’où viens-tu, bergère?
SSA and piano, Boosey & Hawkes M051-47818-7.  A charming setting of one of Canada’s favourite carols suitable for children’s choirs and women’s chorus.  The carol is in the form of a dialogue between a young shepherdess who has returned from the manager and local villagers.  Medium easy.
 

little tree (poem by e. e. cummings)
SSA, piano, flute, cello, harp, Hinshaw Music, HMC 2039 Commissioned by the Kanata Children’s Chorus, Barbara Page-Puppa, director, this is an extensive setting of one of cummings’ lesser known but beautiful texts. The work concludes with a joyous peal of “Noel, noel.” Advanced children or medium adult choir.

Song of the Angels

Commissioned by the award-winning La Jeunesse Girls’ Choir under the direction of Marie Anderson and Deirdre Morrell. This is a colourful soundscape on the “Gloria” of the traditional Latin mass. Experimental effects found throughout are quite accessible and often supported by the tuned and untuned percussion instruments. Gregorian chant inspires the opening and concluding melodies. The work received acclaim at recent international festivals. Difficult.

Thou Shalt Know Him

This Advent and Christmas motet was originally SATB and has become of one Augsburg’s best-selling octavos. An expressive, soaring melody is complimented by rich sonorities. This work has often been recorded by many Canadian choirs and heard on CBC. Moderate
 
Tyrley, tyrlow
SSA, piano and C instrument, Hinshaw HMC 1754
This work was written for the Toronto Children’s Chorus, Jean Ashworth Bartle, director and premiered at Roy Thomson Hall. The text is a traditional Irish poem from the Renaissance; the writing is lyrical, modal, and harmonically inventive. The setting crescendos to an impassioned climax, and fades poignantly wistfully in the final strains of the recorder. Moderate in difficulty.

Canadian Boatsong
SSA and piano, Gordon V. Thompson (Warner Chappell) VG-369
Irish poet Thomas Moore wrote the text for Canadian Boatsong as he traveled along the St. Lawrence River in 1842. The tune is a traditional French folksong. The descriptive piano writing portrays tolling bells, the rapids, and the peacefulness of the evening. Medium difficulty especially good for teens, and women’s voices. Moderately easy.

SSA, and percussion, Boosey & Hawkes. An inventive soundscape on the Georgian Bay landscape. Commissioned by the Saugeen Children’s Chorus. Very effective writing for children’s chorus or women’s voices.  Medium difficulty.

Coming soon Missa Brevis for a Young Girl
SSAA, Boosey & Hawkes, in preparation. Based on the Tradition Latin Mass and additional text by Canadian author Richard Scrimger. This is a major work for treble or women’s choirs. The work can be performed as a Missa brevis, or as a more extensive work that includes an Introit and Benediction, plus various interpolations in varying voicings for full choir or soloists. The work was commissioned by La Jeunesse of Cobourg and has been recorded.

Spinning Wheel, The

“Merrily, cheerily, noiselessly whirring”--this delightful Irish folksong tells the story of a young maiden spinning under the supervision of her grandmother. The sounds heard at the window are that of the young girl’s lover come to steal a kiss without her grandmother knowing. An inventive piano part highlights the humour of the story. Medium easy.
  
Un canadian errant
SSA and piano, Kelman Hall04/20MMP 29    One of Canada’s best loved folk songs, an emotional and heartrending story of a young rebel who is banished from his homeland. This powerful setting has often been used for many festivals including Canada Day Unisong in Ottawa.  Orchestration available.

A soundscape inspired by aboriginal culture. Non-traditional vocal sounds, fragments of Iroquois inspired chants, bird calls, and varied percussion help evoke the atmosphere of the Eastern Woodlands. The work has been performed at ACDA national and regional conventions. Moderate in difficulty and easily adapted for various voice combinations.

O Brillante Estrella SATB and piano, Boosey and Hawkes.  Commissioned by the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, Noel Edison, conductor.  A contemporary vivacious setting of a Latin-American text that celebrates the arrival of the three kings.  Full of bold Spanish harmonies and tango-inspired rhythms great for the concert stage.

Oxen, The

A setting of Thomas Hardy’s magnificent poem about the legend of the oxen kneeling in adoration at midnight on Christmas Eve. A strong, handsome tune is accompanied by a majestic piano part that can also be effectively performed by harp. Very moving ending. Not difficult. Especially good for teen mixed choirs, and older choirs. Medium easy.

Eternal God
SATB a cappella, Boosey & Hawkes.  A melodious prayer of hope on an ancient text by Alcuin of York.  Commissioned by St. George’s Anglican Church, Guelph ON Canada for its 175th anniversary in 2007.  Medium.

Hour of Banquet and Song, The
SATB a cappella, Roger Dean 10/2090R Inspired by plainsong, this communion anthem was composed for Yorkminster Park Baptist Church, Toronto, William Maddox, director. The flowing counterpoint builds to a wonderful climax that gradually fades to a gentle, reflective conclusion.
 
Jesus, Your Boundless Love

O Sons and Daughters

This Easter anthem has been featured twice on the nationally telecast CBC Easter Morning Sunrise Service. It is a verse anthem on the traditional Latin tune “O filii et filliae.” Contrasting verses building to a colourful “Alleluia” conclusion. Easy.

Praise to God

This is a simple anthem suitable for harvest, or any service of thanksgiving. The choral and organ parts are easy. The traditional “Praise God from whom all blessings flow” appears as a descent in the final verse. An anthem that works especially well for a small choir. Easy.
 
Shout to God for Joy
General anthem, SATB, organ and trumpet, Roger Dean 10/2510R Written for Woodroffe United Church, Ottawa this brief anthem of celebration is full of vitality. The choral writing is accessible and is complimented by a highly spirited organ part. Easy.

Thy Kingdom Come SATB and organ Kelman Hall 08/2061 A hymn-anthem suitable for communion and Advent, designed especially for smaller choirs.  This was commissioned for Conrad Grebel Chapel, University of Waterloo. Easy.

SSATBB motet, Walton Music WJMS1097 Commissioned for the National Youth Choir of Canada an extensive a cappella setting of this ancient Latin antiphon (Where charity and love dwell, there is God.)  This sometimes serene, oft-times dramatic work has a great deal of harmonic and contrapuntal interest.  Appropriate for college, university, community and church choirs.  Moderately difficult.

A magnificent a cappella setting that combines the traditional Latin and English texts—appropriate for church and concert stage.  The motet was commissioned by Yorkminster Park Baptist Church, Toronto, and features antiphony between upper and lower voices, and rich, sustained harmonies.

SATB a cappella, Boosey & Hawkes M-051-47825-5  An extensive motet on the English translation of “Ubi caritas” commissioned by the Peterborough Singers, Sydney Birrell, director.  Full of rich sonorities and contrast.  Medium difficult.
 
Wilt Thou Forgive
SATB a cappella, Canadian International CIM1027 A Lenten anthem is a setting of the poem by John Donne more commonly known as “Hymn to God the Father”. A challenging work full of great musical rewards. Difficult.
